Questions
Frequently asked
Is Freemasonry a secret society?
No. Members are free to say they are Freemasons, and our aims, rules and meeting places are public. The only things kept private are the traditional ways members recognise one another.
Is it a religion?
No. Members must believe in a Supreme Being, but Freemasonry is open to men of any faith and is no substitute for religion. Religion and politics are not discussed in lodge.
How much time does it take?
Plumstead Lodge meets five times a year, on Saturdays, at Sidcup Masonic Hall. There is also our Lodge of Instruction every Monday at 8pm in Welling, where members practise and learn together, plus social events.
What does it cost?
There is a one-off joining fee and an annual subscription, plus the cost of dinner at each meeting. Ask our Secretary for the current figures. Members are never expected to give more to charity than they can comfortably afford.
Can my partner and family get involved?
Yes. Our social events are open to partners, family and friends.
Can women become Freemasons?
Lodges under the United Grand Lodge of England are for men. Women can join Freemasonry through the Order of Women Freemasons or the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons.
